FRI. JUN 1 & SAT. JUN 2, 2012 Colusa Casino & Resort

The second annual Dance with Our Stars benefit will take place June 1 and June 2 at Colusa Casino Resort, 3770 California 45, Colusa. The event is a spinoff of the hit television show “Dancing With the Stars.”

“Last year, our Dance With Our Stars event was a big hit and raised more than $40,000 for the Foundation and the American Red Cross,” said Carol Ramirez, FRHG VP, Community Relations, Foundation and Marketing. “Everyone we talk to about it is so excited about this years event. We’re expecting another sell-out.”

“The event is extremely important in helping the Foundation and the ARC raise money,” she said. “Especially with the current economy and funding cutbacks.”

Ramirez said determining the winner of Dance with Our Stars is based on whoever raises the most money: People’s Choice Award — and dancing ability: Judges Choice Award. “Each dancer is paired up with a talented ‘professional’ who will make sure that everyone has a chance to win.”

Participants receive free dance lessons with a professional who will teach each celebrity the steps and guide them through the process. The dancers will perform 2 styles of dances. All six dancers will perform the Swing as their first dance and the second one is the dancer’s choice.

Meet the 2012 lineup for “Dance With Our Stars” a Benefit for the American Red Cross of N.E. California and the Fremont-Rideout Foundation.

Coburn Haskell — known to most everyone as Cobe — passed away last month at age 87.

His long and fruitful life was celebrated this Saturday, March 10, at a memorial at the Fremont-Rideout Conference Center. We’re honored to be the venue for this gathering, since Cobe played a huge role in the development of Rideout Memorial Hospital and our healthcare organization.

Cobe was just 31 when he first joined Rideout’s Board of Directors, a newly-established cattle rancher not long out of UC Davis, which he attended after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the Board for a quarter of a century, from 1955 to 1980, and chaired it for two years in the 1960s. He sold his ranches in 1970 and served as president of the Cleveland-based Haskell Fund from 1984 to 2003, but his interest in and support of healthcare — and us — did not stop when he stepped down from our Board.

Over decades, he remained a significant donor to the Fremont-Rideout Foundation and to Yuba College’s RN and LVN programs. Cobe and his wife, Gerry, were two of the founders of and major donors for the Janice Frank Scholarship for Nursing Leaders, initiated in 2010. They donated the lovely fountain, “Catching the Rain,” located in front of the Fremont-Rideout Conference Center at our headquarters in Yuba City, and two more fountains, which were on display at the groundbreaking March 8, and later sited on the Rideout campus, once construction is completed.

He was a Lifetime Member of the Friends of the Foundation, a member of the Foundation’s Bequest Society and the Platinum Circle, which recognizes donors of $100,000 or more. And, it was to our Foundation and our Hospice Program to which memorial gifts in his honor were suggested.

In 1992, Cobe was the recipient of the Foundation’s prestigious Rideout Award, which is given once every two years to an individual, in recognition of his or her personal, non-monetary, contributions to healthcare for the residents of our region, beyond our own walls. And Cobe certainly made a mark in many places. He had been a member of the Marysville Rotary since 1957, and received Rotary International’s Paul Harris Award, which honors those who exemplify the founder’s credo of “service above self .” He also served on the local boards of the Boy Scouts of America and the United Way.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to his wonderful wife, Gerry, his sister and brothers, sons and stepsons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom can find some small solace in knowing that the world is indeed a better place because of Cobe Haskell.

Donation By Fremont-Rideout Foundation Brings Area Residents Closer to Life-Saving Care

Thanks to a donation of more than $44,000 from the Fremont-Rideout Foundation, the Penn Valley Fire Department’s two ambulances will soon be equipped with wireless EKG machines and PV paramedics will be trained in their use. As a result, the residents in the Penn Valley Fire Protection District (PVFPD) of western Nevada County, including PV and Lake Wildwood, will be closer in time and distance to the advanced life-saving cardiac treatments available at The Heart Center at Rideout Memorial Hospital that are so vital in the initial period after a heart attack.

“Time is heart muscle, and the first 90 minutes are critical,” said Robert Plass, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Fremont-Rideout Health Group, the non-profit community healthcare system that operates Rideout Memorial Hospital, a Level III Trauma Center also designated as a “STEMI Receiving Center,” staffed with cardiac specialists including interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, specialized nurses and ancillary staff who are equipped to handle even the most serious heart attacks. (STEMI is medical shorthand for ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction, an attack caused by clots in one or more of the patient’s coronary arteries.)

In the absence of EKG capability, Penn Valley paramedics have had to transport heart attack victims to a nearby hospital for stabilization and then to a Sacramento hospital for treatment, adding more than an hour from home to heart-saving.

With the new wireless machines installed, the ambulance can proceed directly to The Heart Center at Rideout Memorial Hospital, less than 30 miles away, transmitting the patient’s cardiac status from the vehicle to the hospital. This allows for the diagnosis and treatment plan to be put in place by the emergency and cardiac teams at the hospital while the ambulance is still en route, so the appropriate clinical team is already standing by when the patient comes through the door.

Eric Morgenroth, RN, CEN, BSN, a Clinical Educator for Rideout Memorial Emergency Department, will train 14 paramedics in a multi-day course scheduled for completion by mid-March, after installation of the EKG machines. The curriculum was developed in consultation with Capt. Clayton Thomas, Paramedic and QI Coordinator for the PVFPD, and George Broder, M.D., who heads the Fremont-Rideout Specialty Care Center in Penn Valley. It was Dr. Broder, who is Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases, who saw the need for the ambulance EKG machines and proposed the donation and facilitated the new cooperation between the Fire Dept. and Fremont-Rideout.

The PVFPD is located at 10513 Spenceville, Rd., Penn Valley; 530-432-2630. The Fremont-Rideout Specialty Care Center is located at 11386 Pleasant Valley Rd., Penn Valley; 530 205-9850. The Heart Center at Rideout, is a STEMI designated center offering the full spectrum of life-saving interventional procedures, from minimally invasive PCIs [Percutaneous Coronary Intervention], such as angioplasty, to open heart surgery/bypass, are located at 725 Fourth St., Marysville; 530 749-4458. Persons who believe they or a loved one may be suffering a heart attack should immediately call 911 for assistance.
