Dear Friends,
In order to continue to meet the needs of our community and the ever-growing demands on it, the Emergency Department at Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville must expand.
Visits to the Emergency Department, the area’s only emergency care facility, have more than doubled in less than a decade, from 25,455 in 2001 to nearly 55,000 in 2010.
Currently, our emergency facility comprises only 12,000 square feet; state and local emergency planners tell us we need an additional 5,000 square feet in order to keep pace with demand.
While the dedicated Emergency Department staff do everything possible to minimize the wait for treatment, a facility designed for only half the number of current patients understandably suffers from overcrowding, lack of privacy and long line-ups.
An expanded Emergency Department will allow us to deliver emergency services in a safe, efficient and patient-friendly manner. It is critical to maintaining the quality of life in our region – now and in the future. This expansion will serve our community for many years to come.
The Rideout Emergency Department Expansion includes:
- 13 multi-use Observation beds in the 5,000 square foot addition – alleviating pressure on inpatient beds by patients still being observed and assessed, and improving arrival-to-admission times
- Two Rapid Care exam rooms – improving door-to-discharge times
- One additional Triage room (for a total of two) — substantially improving patient assessment and care
The Expanded ED will:
- Offer patients more privacy
- Allow ED staff to treat non-emergency cases more quickly

Rideout Memorial Hospital has been officially designated a “STEMI Receiving Center” by the Sierra-Sacramento Valley Emergency Medical Services Agency, (S-SVEMSA), the Joint Powers Agency responsible for EMS planning, certification and implementation in ten area counties. This designation recognizes that Rideout Memorial is specially qualified, equipped and staffed to handle even the most serious cases of ‘STEMI’ heart attacks. (STEMI is medical shorthand for ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction, an attack caused by clots in one or more of the patient’s coronary arteries.)
The designation, effective July 1, means that patients in the counties of Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, Nevada and parts of Butte and Placer Counties will be closer to advanced, life-saving cardiac treatment so vital in the initial period after a heart attack.
The STEMI designation formally recognizes the constellation of personnel and procedures Rideout’s Emergency Dept. has in place to handle these most serious heart attacks, further enhancing the continuum of cardiac care available 24 hours a day at the hospital. That continuum begins in the field with the EMTs responding to a 911 call and the transmission of the patient’s cardiac status via wireless EKG, which allows for the diagnosis and treatment plan to be put in place while the ambulance is still en route, so the appropriate clinical team is already standing by when the patient comes through the door.
“Rideout Memorial is already a designated Level III Trauma Center for our region, one of fewer than 60 in the entire state,” said Terri Hamilton, Fremont-Rideout’s CEO. “The STEMI designation adds another dimension to the advanced medical care we are able to provide to our community.”
Fremont-Rideout Health Group (FRHG) and Peach Tree Healthcare (PTH), both non-profit community healthcare systems, will begin a new collaboration to offer round-the-clock, cost-effective urgent care at Marysville Immediate Care, adjacent to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville. The Marysville Immediate Care facility now operates around the clock.
Marysville Immediate Care, operated by Peach Tree Healthcare, is located at 724 Fifth Street, across a parking lot from the entrance to the Rideout Emergency Dept. Board Certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other healthcare staff treat minor illnesses and injuries, including infections, respiratory problems, cuts, burns, sprains, strains and fractures. No appointment is necessary, and there is free and ample dedicated patient parking right next to the building. Rideout’s laboratory and imaging departments will provide services for Immediate Care patients around the clock, with Rideout staff also available to act as couriers for lab materials and escorts for patients.
“The goal of our collaboration is to improve both the experience and health outcomes of patients in our community, and the affordability of care. Expanding Immediate Care’s hours of operation to 24/7 will further improve easy access to primary care providers and treatment for people with medical needs that do not require emergency treatment,” said Terri Hamilton, CEO, FRHG. “This goal is consistent with our mission to provide superior healthcare to everyone in our region, regardless of their ability to pay.”

Patients at the Immediate Care facility who are determined to need treatment at or admitting to a hospital will be referred or transferred to Rideout’s Emergency Department, just around the corner. “Rideout Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department physicians and highly skilled staff remain ready to care for anyone with trauma, medical emergencies, or who requires hospital admission,” said Hamilton.

- Emergency Physician, Rideout Emergency Dept., will throw out the ceremonial first-pitch
- Brain Stem Stroke survivor and grateful patient Eric Jordan – in appreciation of Dr. Kulwinder Singh and ED physicians – will run the bases.
- A fantastic Fireworks display on behalf of our expansion will top off the evening.

Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center, UC Davis Health System leaders and FRHG Board of Directors — will break ground on our much needed Cancer Center expansion, August 3, 2011, beginning at 3pm.
The groundbreaking will take place on the facility grounds, Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center, 618 5th Street, Marysville.
The brief ceremony will include a presentation by UC Davis Cancer Center physicians and FRHG officials. Light appetizers and refreshments will be served.
The expansion was designed by Kelly Architecture and Planning, Inc., to provide a more comfortable, private environment for patients and their families. Hilbers Construction, Inc., a local firm, is leading the construction project.
“We look forward to the opportunities that this enlarged facility will bring to our patients,” says Susan Vague, Administrator, Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center. “The construction, albeit noisy and a bit inconvenient, is literally paving the way for the future of outstanding cancer care treatment locally. “
The expansion will add 16,461 square feet of new construction and will enable us to add:
- 11 additional Transfusion Bays, for a total of 25
- 6 additional Exam Rooms for a total of 14
- 1 additional Linear Accelerator for a total of 2
- 1 new PET CT Scanner
- 1 new Ultrasound
- New Reception & Waiting area & office space
- A remodel of the existing Pharmacy
Construction is expected to be completed by fall of 2012.
“An expanded Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center will have a meaningful impact on the lives of many men and women in our community who need treatment for cancer,” stated Terri Hamilton, CEO, FRHG. “Last year alone, more than 800 new patients were referred to the cancer center resulting in 28,500 patient visits.”
