Nursing: A Profession and A Passion.

Today is the start of National Nurses Week, culminating in the celebration on May 12 of the 191st birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is credited with the creation of this noble career path.

Miss Nightingale mentored Linda Richards, America’s first formally trained nurse, who helped establish the new profession in the U.S., in the 1870s. When our founder, Phebe Rideout, decided to donate her Marysville mansion into a community hospital in 1907, she wanted a special person to manage it and to train the staff. Her choice was Miss Fannie Southern, who was — no surprise — a nurse. And the name of the Chico hospital where Miss Southern received her training? Florence Nightingale. Of course.

The training and traditions of nursing have been handed down the generations. They’re now in the hands and hearts of the more than 500 Registered Nurses and 400 nursing support staff working at Fremont-Rideout Health Group. The passion for the profession, on the other hand, is kindled anew with each individual who decides, at a young age or later in life, to make patient care his or her career.

Miss Nightingale recognized the art, the preparation and the devotion it takes to be a nurse. So do we all, and we are grateful to all our nurses who chose to make this commitment to the profession, to our organization and the community we serve.

It’s an extremely demanding job, by any measure. But no matter what comes along on any given shift, you can count on nurses to carry on, in the tradition of all nurses.

I have some exciting news to share with you: Expansion of our Emergency Department and Trauma Center will begin this summer!

Last week, the Emergency Department at Rideout Memorial Hospital began its tenth year of operation as a Level III Trauma Center, the only trauma center between Chico and Roseville, Sacramento or Davis.

This week, our plans for Phase One of a two phase expansion of the department were approved by the Board of Directors. Construction will begin this coming summer.

When our Emergency Department was last expanded — just a few years before our Trauma Center status became official — it was designed to accommodate approximately 25,000 visits per year. For the past several years, we have been treating more than double that number of patients.. Those 55,000 annual visits mean we now see an average of 150 ER visitors a day, 365 days a year; six per hour, 24 hours a day. Darn right, we need more space.

The expansion of the Emergency Department will add an additional triage room and 13 multi-use ED/Observation beds for a total of 39. The Fremont-Rideout Foundation will lead a capital campaign to help support the investment of the $6.2 million needed for this vital project.

As one of only 45 trauma centers in the entire state of California with a Level I, II or III designation, we have an exceptional duty not only to our nearest neighbors but to a larger population for whom our facility can mean the difference between life and death. This expansion and the other upcoming enhancements to the RMH campus will help us to better serve our community and deliver on our mission — and obligation — to provide quality medical care to all who need it. And, it will provide our staff with a facility that does justice to their extraordinary skills and dedication.

Footnote: From Carol Ramirez, VP Foundation, Community Relations, Marketing: Please look for details about our upcoming Capital Improvement Campaign for the ED Expansion in the coming weeks. The existing Rideout Memorial Hospital Emergency Department is a vital resource for our community. This project is all about helping out community, and we are counting on the community’s support to help us reach our expansion goals. The expansion will serve future generations for many years to come.
